Diogo Pereira - Winemaker

Meet the LW Group winemaker Diogo Pereira, he coordinates the winemaking in each estate.

Our three estates all have a different style and it is his job to make sure they complement each other.

Read his full interview here and get to know more about our wines.

What is your background in the wine industry?

I studied Oenology at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, graduated in 2001.

Since then I have worked in the regions of Douro, Távora Varosa and Alentejo. These years of experience in different wineries gave me the fundamentals of understanding the art of winemaking and shaped who I am today.

Over the last 10 years, I have combined my work as winemaker with wine consultancy and also founded a wine  distribution company.

We manage to deliver authentic wines in a large scale making it possible for LW group to be a good example of Portuguese wine export. We want our wines to be “as nature intended”.

Diogo Pereira - Winemaker

How do you define your role in the Group?

My role as the Group winemaker is to coordinate the winemaking in each estate. I work closely with our local winemakers and it starts with a careful and meticulous selection in the vineyard. The treatment of each grape variety, the decision of the harvest date and the vinification.

It is all a strategic planning of the vintage which we do together.

The last part, the blending, it’s when we begin to define the identity of each Wine, which will create the Brand, define the style for each Estate and anticipate the market trends. Our three estates all have a different style and it is my job to make sure they complement each other.

There is a word always present in the LW group – Authentic, what does that word mean to you?

It represents our core values: Respect for nature and preservation of the environment, practicing sustainable agriculture, with minimal intervention, adding no sugars and no pasteurization process. We produce around 1 million bottles per year but we do not use industrial methods or synthetic additives. Parts of our production is organic certified and also vegan friendly. Authentic to me means honest and not fake and “as nature intended”.

What makes the wines from LW group unique?

Our wines reflects the different estates and its conditions. They are all different in style and reflects the very different “terroir” at the same time good example of quality winemaking. We manage to deliver authentic wines in a large scale making it possible for LW group to be a good example of Portuguese wine export. We want our wines to be “as nature intended”.
